Fabric Plus, business partner of Women on Wings, received the Gold Trophy for outstanding expert performance of handloom products from North Eastern region. The awards ceremony took place on 5 December 2014 during the 27th Handloom Export Awards as part of the golden jubilee celebration year of the Handloom Expert Promotion Council (HEPC). The awards were presented by Hon’ble Minister of State for Textiles (Independent Charges), Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar.
Handloom: India’s second-largest sector
According to HEPC, India’s handloom sector employs about 4.3 million people and is the second-largest employment provider for the rural population in India after agriculture. The handloom sector accounts for 15% of the total cloth produced in the country and has the largest infrastructure with 2.3 million weaving looms. India supplies 95% of world demand for hand woven fabric.
