Network activities in context of International Women’s Day

Each year on March 8, people around the world celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD). IWD was first celebrated in 1975 by the United Nations. Recently, Women on Wings supported 2 events in Rotterdam and The Hague, to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.

Invitation to join trade missions
On March 6, Ellen Tacoma, co-founder Women on Wings, joined the conference “The Power of Entrepreneurial Women Wordwide”, organized by CARE Nederland and SMO. Ellen shared the story of mother Durga and her daughter Anjali, showing how rural women with an income can make a difference for the next generation.
Lilianne Ploumen, Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, was also present; she invited more women to join her trade missions. Women can show more ambition and power to achieve their goals. Practice shows great advantages of women entrepreneurs; women include social goals into the business.

Invitation to show ambition
On March 11, Maria van der Heijden, co-founder Women on Wings, joined the Indian Ladies Club in The Hague to discuss the Empowerment of women with a group of 80 Hindustan women. Four speakers shared their stories about empowering women by business development and social & health awareness. Maria explained that business development is not only about skill development of the women, but also about getting supply chains in place to create sustainable business which results in sustainable jobs and incomes. The Indian Ambassador in the Netherlands, Mr. Rajesh Prasad, was puzzled at the end of the meeting: for him it is so obvious that women have competences to concur the challenges in the world. Why are there still not enough women in key decision making positions worldwide?
