There are many different embroidery techniques in India and each region has its own style. IKEA designers and product developers work together with local female artisans to develop patterns and products using traditional handicraft techniques. The products are homemade, so the women also have time to look after their children, animals and other household chores.
‘Hemgjord’ by Indian female artisans
Homemade, ‘hemgjord’ in Swedish, gets a new meaning thanks to the HEMGJORD limited collection from IKEA. Products like cushion covers, placemats, napkins, table runners and baskets of sustainable banana fibers are handmade by women in rural India. By earning an income, these women get the opportunity to create a better future for themselves and their families. When IKEA began its ‘social mission’ in India three years ago, 175 female artisans were working on the products. Today, more than 1,500 rural crafts women are involved in the HEMGJORD limited collection.
Now at IKEA stores in the Netherlands
The HEMGJORD collection is the result of a unique collaboration with social enterprises in India. Women on Wings’ business partner Rangsutra Crafts is one of these enterprises. Already six collections resulted from this collaboration, available only in a small number of selected IKEA stores in Europe. The special collections are successful and thus spread their wings; the KRYDDAD limited collection is available in the Netherlands since last fall. And the new HEMGJORD limited spring collection, as seen in the picture, will be available from March 2017 in all IKEA stores in the Netherlands. Read more about the special collaboration.
