Reinvesting in the Community

Kumaun Grameen Udyog’s (KGU) products give benefits directly to the community. While its agricultural products are sourced directly from farmers, KGU strives to pay its knitters and weavers a fair wage. Women on Wings and KGU collaborate in their joint mission of creating more employment opportunities for women in the Kumaun hills region.

Providing hill women income
KGU products are sold under its brand name Kilmora, which include hand woven and hand knitted textiles, apricot skin care products, naturally grown culinary herbs, cereals and spices and fruit processed products such as jams, chutneys and juices. KGU helps to maximize the returns to rural producers. In a region largely dependent on subsistence agriculture and a variable fruit crop, KGU’s outreach gives a meaningful income to the families it is involved with.

Better future
For KGU’s weavers, round-the-year income enables them to think of better futures for their children and themselves. The income gives the women greater control over their lives. It is compulsory for them to open bank accounts, which in a way has made them financially literate and more responsible of their income and savings.

Just do it
The Women on Wings team, comprising joint Managing Director Ronald van het Hof and Sr. Business Consultant Supriya Kapoor, and KGU’s management worked on KGU’s next step in growth and more specifically on plans as how to increase KGU’s sales. Anurag Chatrath, Managing Director at KGU: “As always, it was an absolute pleasure to have Ronald and Supriya over. These sessions are so much fun and so useful for us. They have left us completely energized this time. The steps for improvement which we defined will surely lead to better results. We just have to do it! ”
